An environment for the future created by everyone
Using our existing teams of volunteers, their friends and families and Lichfield residents to enhance and extend the green corridor as we restore a derelict canal. Our actions, enhancing biodiversity, will raise awareness of how local people can contribute to improving their environment.

Situation
The Trust always puts the environment at the centre of the canal restoration work we undertake. But the wider community is not fully aware of the many ways that the canal restoration can support our local environment and wildlife. It is likely that in the next few years we will all see changes in the way the green spaces around us are treated. People need to have information to understand the changes being made.

Solution
By planting more trees and wildflowers, holding our habitat events and providing information about our environmental work we will help Lichfield residents to understand the changes and even make changes themselves. Supplementing other restoration work that will provide environmental improvement adjacent to three new residential sites for c.1,400 dwellings, bringing the environment, biodiversity and a green corridor to their door-step.

Aims

• Carrying out planting along the canal route, creating habitats by volunteer-led teams to nationally recognised standards.
• Investing in publicity material, information boards and sheets we will attract local people of all ages to join our volunteering teams to take part in a habitat event. We will also raise awareness of environmental issues locally.

Where will the money go?

• £6,000 – Trees, hedging and wildflower seeds
• £2,000 – Bird and bat boxes
• £6,000 – Information boards and publicity.

The project is flexible and will be expanded, both in the scope of the habitat created and in terms of the involvement of our community if more is raised and scaled back if less is raised.
